Comfortable Tooth Extractions with Gentle Care

While our immediate concern is the short-term management of your care, we will also discuss your long-term plans for replacing missing teeth. Leaving a space is always an option, but spaces in your smile can create appearance and function challenges that are important to consider. Teeth slowly shift or migrate into open spaces and minimizing the effects of an unbalanced bite now can prevent issues later in life.

Although our primary goal is to help your teeth stay healthy and functional, an extraction is sometimes the best way to preserve the overall health of your mouth. Since teeth help nourish our bodies and support our confidence, we will help you create a plan that fits your short and long-term goals.

Tooth Extraction and Recovery Information

At Forest Hills Family Dentistry, we strive to make every procedure as comfortable and stress-free as possible. When a tooth extraction is needed, our doctors will begin by carefully numbing the tooth, surrounding gums, and jawbone with a local anesthetic to ensure a pain-free experience.

Once the area is numb, you should not feel discomfort during the procedure. If at any point you do, please let us know immediately — your comfort is our priority.

After the extraction, our experienced team will go over tooth replacement options that best suit your needs and goals.

Understanding Surgical Extraction

Some teeth may require a surgical approach, especially if they’re firmly anchored, have curved roots, or the socket isn’t able to expand enough for safe removal. In these cases, the tooth is gently sectioned into smaller pieces, which are then removed one at a time. This technique helps protect the surrounding bone and tissue while ensuring a smooth extraction.

Post-extraction Care Instructions

Proper care after tooth extraction is essential to promote healing and reduce the risk of complications:
  • Bite down on a gauze pad for 30–45 minutes after your procedure to help form a blood clot.
  • If bleeding continues, place a new gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may need to repeat this a few times.
  • Avoid disturbing the clot: do not rinse vigorously, use straws, smoke, drink alcohol, or brush near the extraction site for the first 72 hours.
  • Limit intense physical activity for the first 24 hours, as it may increase bleeding.

Managing Pain and Swelling

It’s common to experience some discomfort and swelling after the procedure. To minimize swelling, apply an ice pack or a cold compress (like a bag of frozen peas) to the area for 20-minute intervals. Take all prescribed pain medications as directed. Swelling typically peaks around 48 hours, then begins to subside.

If antibiotics are prescribed, continue taking them as instructed — even if symptoms improve. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids and stick to soft, nutritious foods on the day of the extraction. Return to your normal eating habits once you’re comfortable.
