Bite Mark Case Number One

This 3 year old child abuse victim was reportedly bitten on his left leg in addition to having both of his legs dipped in boiling water. This bitemark injury actually contains three separate bites. When the bitemark evidence was being analyzed with the suspect population, the alignment of the bite appeared to be on the right leg. A call was made to the case manager who confirmed the bite on the left leg. Still unbelieving, the forensic dentist asked for a copy of the emergency room report, which listed the bitemark injury as being on the right leg. Apparently the negative of the photograph was reversed when the image was printed "nearly life sized."

The analysis of the bitemark evidence conclusively implicated only one of the suspects and was a contributor in the successful prosecution of the suspect.

The first photograph shows the injury correctly oriented on the victim's right leg. The second image shows a courtroom display prepared orienting an overlay of the suspect's lower front teeth to the marking of one of the bitemark injuries.
